What does a doula do?

As a doula, I am there to provide you with loving, supportive energy, helping you manage the intensity of the birthing process, in whatever kind of birth  you wish to have. I am also there to provide assistance to your partner, making sure that they are as much a part of the process as they’d like to be. I offer touch, words of encouragement, birthing position suggestions, help with breathing, visualization techniques, and pain management through massage and the use of a rebozo. I am there to help you self-advocate, encourage you stick to your birth plan, remind you of all that is important to you, and be there for any other tasks that fall within my jurisdiction.

As a doula I do not: advocate for you, perform any medical or clinical tasks, make decisions for you, or judge you in regard to your birth plan.

Birth is a spiritual experience that is unsurpassed in a lifetime, an experience that each [birthing person] deserves in a safe and comfortable setting and with a provider whose goal is a safe passage, a new beginning, and the avoidance of unnecessary interventions."
